Pursuit of profit hurting the media

The pursuit of profit is putting the historic role of the press as the watchdog of democracy at stake, MEPs from all political parties have warned. Measures to protect editorial independence and quality of content are desperately needed in order to prevent interference from owners, shareholders or governments, says a report adopted yesterday in the European Parliament's culture committee.
"The cases of unrestricted ownership concentration or of scarce content pluralism in the media are endangering cultural diversity and freedom of expression not only within national markets but also at European level," said committee chair.
The report is about the safeguarding of democracy. There needs to be a way to assure pluralism of media channels and assure the balance between quantity and quality in the media market. "Unfortunately that's not the case in EU 27 [member states], " she said.
Another key recommendation of the report is the creation of 'editorial charters' to be applied in the same way in all member states to ensure a clear separation between the editorial and business side of media outlets. Such charters would also lay out principles that would aim to prevent interference by governments. A number of Italian MEPs – Italy's prime minister Silvio Berlusconi owns large parts of the media - were particularly concerned about such phenomena.

Internet changing Journalism...

According to a news article on the Project for Excellence in Journalism’s annual State of the News Media report:
"The Internet has profoundly changed journalism, but not necessarily in ways that were predicted even a few years ago, a study on the industry released Sunday found.
It was believed at one point that the Net would democratize the media, offering many new voices, stories and perspectives. Yet the news agenda actually seems to be narrowing, with many Web sites primarily packaging news that is produced elsewhere, according to the Project for Excellence in Journalism’s annual State of the News Media report
."
I don’t know whether journalist is taking a liberty by saying that “the news agenda actually seems to be narrowing” or the report is actually concluding this. I haven’t read the report, but the two examples this article is using to illustrate this change are not really convincing:
"Two stories - the war in Iraq and the 2008 presidential election campaign - represented more than a quarter of the stories in newspapers, on television and online last year, the project found.Take away Iraq, Iran and Pakistan, and news from all of the other countries in the world combined filled up less than 6 percent of the American news hole, the project said."
What about the previous situation? Where is the comparison to measure a change? Is there a narrowing movement or a resilience of the old situation at the top, that is, no change in the big stories, and a change at the bottom, namely a booming in different types of small stories? How many different stories represent these 75% and then 6%? These figures count the number of stories, what’s their audience? And of the 25% reporting the war in Iraq and the elections, how diverse are these stories? Too many questions.
Besides, for an article that includes this paragraph:
"Most news Web sites are no longer final destinations. The report found that many users insist that the sites, and even individual pages, offer plenty of options to navigate elsewhere for more information, the project found. Rosenstiel said he’s even able to reach Washington Post stories through the New York Times’ website"
It is rather disappointing that I had to go to Google to find a link to the State of the Media report.

Trafficking - Torture, by any other name

Blogs: Filling the EU's 'communication gap'?

A broad variety of blogs on European affairs has emerged since 2005, and even Commissioners are running blogs of their own now - but the question is whether blogs will really lead to more European debate.

Some EU lawmakers have seen blogs as a way to reconnect with citizens, following the rejection of the draft EU Constitution in France and the Netherlands. Commission Vice-President Margot Wallström , and three other commissioners (Boel , Potocnik , Špidla ) now also run regular blogs and two others (Dimas and Kuneva) are preparing theirs.
Individual citizens have also started EU-related blogs and even professional journalists and media have created their own blogs to comment on EU affairs (see
FT Brussels blog , the BBC's Mark Mardell's Euroblog and Jean Quatremer's Coulisses de Bruxelles blog for Libération). Full article and list of EU blogs

Studies on media inflluence on public opinion

They say that human beings use just ten per cent of their brains. They say that non-cholesterol fat is better than saturated fat. They say that small scrawls in a stone have proven that there was life in Mars. They say that our children's exams qualifications are decreasing. They say that Jesus was a King David's direct descendent. They say that you can earn 15000€ on your spare time. They say that marihuana leads you to LSD and LSD guides you to suicide. They say that a job in an office is a symbol of power. They say that old people will have flue this winter. They say that homosexuality is a peculiarity environmentally learned. They say that there is a gen for homosexuality. They say that people under hypnosis can do everything. They say that people under hypnosis will not do anything that they would not do conscious. They say that Prozac relieves depression. They say that fix deposits are the best for a long term investment. They say that you do not know which kind of expenses decrease taxes.

Who exactly are they and why do they say so many things?.
And, the most important, why do we listen to the
m?
